Redefining Therapy and Business Through Movement
Somatic Therapy San Francisco
Recently I had the chance to be on a podcast discussing how we can use movement to redefine therapy and business. The podcast is by Zynnyme, a company that helps therapists tackle the business side of owning a therapy practice. As crazy as it sounds, in graduate school we had not one class that taught us how to be business owners. And many of us therapists hate numbers and accounting as much or more than the next person. Zynnyme helps therapists take control of their business and their lives in a compassionate, thoughtful, and practical way. In this podcast episode, we talk about how movement and listening to your body can help inform what is next for a person’s business.
How Fear Keeps Us Stuck in Business and In Life
In my practice, I see a lot of people that are frozen in fear. It’s part of our response when we are scared—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. The thing about being stuck in freeze—it can creep up on us. We may not notice when we haven’t moved forward or can’t make decisions until a great deal of time has passed. Or maybe we are aware of feeling stuck and watch ourselves continue to waffle between choices with out taking any action. Maybe thoughts keep swirling around in the brain and we weigh the pros and cons a million times but nothing holds much weight. It can be frustrating to note our freeze state and the lack of traction in any direction. What do we do then?
How Somatic Therapy San Francisco Can Help You Move Forward in Your Life And Business
As simple as it sounds, the solution to freeze is coming back to the body. Noticing and shifting our attention from what is going on in our brains to the sensations and feelings in our body can help us start to move forward. And movement, as simplistic as it sounds, is often the way to move forward. When an animal is chased and narrowly escapes from a predator, one of the first things it does is shake its whole body. The movement reminds the animal that it is alive AND that it is safe.
Movement, and somatic therapy specifically, can be the way to come back to our body and remind us that we are safe. When we feel safe and secure, there is more room in our brains for play and creativity. As I talk about in the podcast episode, you can’t make sound business decisions from a place of fear. Being able to move and sense in the body, beyond helping us regulate our emotions, helps us decide what to do in life from a non-fear based place. Movement and presence are the ultimate way to hone our intuition and release all things that may inhibit us.
