Top 4 Truths About Starting Somatic Therapy in San Francisco

Somatic Therapy San Francisco

Once you decide to start somatic therapy you might wonder what to expect from the process. Somatic therapy is a great modality but often has a lot of misconceptions.  In order to clear up some of these misconceptions, here are three truths about starting somatic therapy in San Francisco.

1)     You will learn how to tap into wisdom your body holds.

In our culture, we can be very judgmental and even punishing towards our bodies.  By thinking that we need to make our bodies look or perform a certain way, we can often ignore the deeper wisdom our bodies hold about our feelings, thoughts, and, even our lives.  Somatic therapy will allow you to build the connection you have to your body and its inner wisdom.

2)    You will feel more connected to your feelings and will be able to notice even more subtle emotions.

Since emotions start in the body, dance therapy will help you to notice when you start to feel emotions and how those emotions show up in your body.  Once you are able to identify emotions (even subtle ones) you can learn a variety of ways to cope with them.

3)    You will notice how your thoughts and feelings (aka your mind and body) interact and influence each other.

By thinking certain thoughts, we can cause ourselves to feel emotions. Those emotions show in our body--our facial expressions, our body language, and behavior. The reverse is also true. By using our body to feel different emotions, we can influence our thoughts, and can create new patterns of thinking and feeling—thus changing our lives.

4)    You will have space to process stress, anxiety, trauma, and other symptoms just like you would in talk therapy.

Just like in talk therapy, somatic therapy will allow you to work through mental health challenges to improve your life.  Through a combination of both movement and talking, your therapist will help you start to unravel the patterns that are causing you pain in your life.
