3 Myths About Starting Somatic Therapy: Somatic Therapy San Francisco

Somatic Therapy San Francisco

When starting somatic therapy in San Francisco, it can be hard to know what to expect. Most people think of therapy as a place where they can vent their frustrations or lie on a couch but have no idea what to expect when starting somatic therapy in San Francisco. Along with not knowing what to expect, sometimes there can be myths or misconceptions about somatic therapy. Here are a few myths that I will debunk.

Top 3 Myths About Starting Somatic Therapy in San Francisco

1) Somatic Therapy Is Not As Effective As Talk Therapy

That is not necessarily true . There are many types of somatic therapies and some are just as effective as talk therapy. For instance, there is research that has shown that dance therapy (adta.org) is as effective as talk therapy. It is helpful to learn more about each specific modality and whether there is research into the effectiveness of each modality.

2) All Somatic Therapies Are Alike

Each somatic therapy offers different advantages and disadvantages. Somatic experiencing is different from dance therapy which is is different from other types of somatic therapies so it is important to find which modality might work best for you. Any therapy that uses the body can be called a somatic therapy so it is important to find out what training is required for different somatic therapy modalities. Feel free to ask a potential somatic therapist how they are trained and how they might work with you to help you choose which modality fits best with your needs.

3) If You Use a Somatic Therapy To Heal, You Won’t Talk In A Session At All

Somatic therapies definitely use the body but you will ALSO process what happens in your body verbally as well. What happens in your body, whether it is a memory, thought, feeling, or physical sensation, is all information that can help us talk about psychological issues. It would be odd if the therapy did not involve any verbal processing from the therapist whatsoever!
