FAQs About Anxiety Therapy in San Francisco
Questions to Ask about Anxiety Therapy in San Francisco
San Francisco is a beautiful city with so many things to offer and a wealth of therapists that treat anxiety. It can be daunting to try and sort through all of the options and it is normal to have questions for your potential therapists. The following are common questions asked by clients when starting treatment for anxiety in San Francisco
1) Will therapy make my anxiety go away completely?
Therapy will not make your anxiety go away completely. Anxiety is a human emotion and you will experience anxiety from time to time (which is normal, good, even!) You should feel anxious in certain situations, e.g. a car barreling toward you or before giving a speech. Therapy will give you the tools to cope with anxiety and often can help the frequency and intensity of anxious feelings. However, be wary of any therapist who promises you will never feel anxiety again!
2) Will I need medication to treat my anxiety?
Medication can be necessary if you have severe anxiety. However, a therapist a) cannot determine if you need medication nor b) prescribe it. Therapists work on helping you cope with anxiety and eliminating causes of anxiety. Often when medication is provided, therapy is pursued at the same time for best results.
3) What can I expect to change if I start therapy for my anxiety?
A good anxiety therapist will be able to outline how your life may change if you start treatment. Of course, every client is different and the results you receive depend on your doing the work of using tools taught in therapy and following suggestions outside of therapy. However, a potential therapist should be able to talk about ways your anxiety may be lessened.through meeting potential treatment goals.
4) I only get anxious in certain situations. Is therapy still right for me?
Therapy can help determine what causes you to be anxious in specific situations and how to deal with the anxiety that occurs. Anxiety could be linked to unexpressed emotions, psychological trauma, etc.. A good anxiety therapist will help you determine the source of your anxiety as well as deliver coping skills for you to use.
